Shepard-Acres Homes Neighborhood Library | Harris County, TX

The first thing I ask the front desk when I arrive on 4/2/26 is if the printer is working. They tell me yes. When I leave, I end up having to call the printer company because their machine failed to print 2 color jobs after already charging my card. However, I put no one at fault because I imagine technical issues can easily arise when numerous print jobs are wirelessly queued up to one machine. In hindsight, it was probably too much to hope to print an intricate bus route map in color. Because of the $1 minimum, I tried to add enough items to the queue to meet it when I could have made due with a single 15 cent black and white print. One isolated event aside, I really do find this local neighborhood library a good representation of all the greater HPL system can offer. So many resources made available nearby, in a timely manner, and at no cost to the patron. If one branch does not have an item in stock, it can be put in transit from another branch using holds (more popular items have longer wait lists). From books to media and even to tech, the combined HPL catalogs are vast. Using the Libby App also adds more digital offerings such as e-books or audiobooks should the paper copy not be quickly available. Yet holds for books don't take long to arrive at your home branch either. One concept unique to HPL (HCPL doesn't have it) is the library of things; It encourages the sharing of physical items- for example a dvd player- throughout the branches for patrons to use in lieu of every consumer buying what they want in stores/online and discarding it after they grow tired of it. Supposedly, this philosophy is more eco friendly. In a similar vein, donations to local branches can provide items for resale as there are designated shelves to separate those things that are for loan and those for buying. There's probably an affiliated book warehouse that sorts these things out for reuse, recycling, or resale. It's rather ironic that all the free services work without a hitch and the one time I try to pay for printing- the initial impetus for this review- an issue crops up. There is a saying: "Everything works 100% of the time when it works." TLDR The Shepard Acres library specifically is good and the idea of a library in general is good.

Small, warm neighborhood library. The staff is kind and helpful. It's also always quiet and welcoming. I usually do a hold in the app but sometimes I go in and brown and it's worth it every time. Nothing like a quaint library. It also needs more love so library lovers visit more but please keep it considerate and loving.

I love how the library is always very neat and organized. The ladies there are very nice and friendly. Each time that I have a question they don't hesitate to answer and are always up to help me. I love the trivia questions posted on the wall. Great job ladies. There is nothing like walking in somewhere where you are greeted warmly. So far they have had the selection of books I look for. The best of all is that my daughter loves to go to the library!

The atmosphere is wonderful but at various times it may get noisy. The staff is very helpful of all questions big or small. The computers are accessible very easy by guest and members. Great for studies as this place has a 97 person limit. The tempeture is great as well as the lighting. The book line up is okay but they will get anything your looking for in swift as possible. Its always neat and well managed.
