Queens Public Library at Bayside | Queens, NY

In this library, there is a white-haired male librarian who always quietly puts books back in order. There is also a woman who wears a mask, but somehow you can still feel her kindness through her smile. Another staff member, a black-haired woman with big eyes who sits on the right side after you walk in, is always trying to make children laugh. There are also two Asian women, one more serious and one more gentle, but both of them are always doing their best to help people. My daughter truly loves this place. Whenever she has free time, she asks us to bring her here. To her, this library is not just a building with books. It is a happy and special place. Today, I brought my four-year-old daughter to the library. She is a big fan of KPop Demon Hunters. In the middle of the library, she saw a KPop Demon Hunters puzzle that was only half finished. She tried for a long time to complete it, but she could not do it. She became very sad because, to her, the three main characters were left unfinished. She cared about it so much that she asked me to help her. I tried too, but it was difficult for me as well. While we were trying our best to finish the puzzle, an older female librarian came over and spoke to us in a harsh way. She told us not to ruin the puzzle. I was shocked and immediately told her that my daughter was not ruining it at all. She was trying to fix it. We argued for a while. After that, the librarian changed her words and said she had not been harsh in the first place. Then she called over another male librarian to deal with the situation, and things became even more upsetting. This was a deeply hurtful experience. First, she wrongly accused my daughter of damaging something she loved. Second, she showed my daughter that someone could be unfair to her, upset her, and then simply walk away without taking responsibility. Third, when she called another librarian over, it made my daughter feel like the place she loved was no longer welcoming her. For a small child, that feeling is heartbreaking. My daughter was crying the entire time. For a parent, that was also a deeply painful and difficult moment. Part of me wanted to take her away immediately just to help her stop crying. But at the same time, I felt that I needed to show her something important: when she is wrongly blamed, the people who truly love her will not hide and stay silent. Meanwhile, the librarian who had wrongly accused my daughter stayed hidden in the office the entire time. Until the moment we left the library, she never came out again.

We love coming to this library with my 2 year old nephew! The main children's librarian is wonderful and knows my nephew, always greeting him warmly and offering a sticker. We can spend a long time reading the large collection of books. They also have coloring pages and puzzles. They also have programs during the week.

I believe that our Public Library system is one of this country's great resources. I have traveled to so many states and graciously received help from library staff wherever I have gone. Today at the Bayside Public Library, I was curtly told that library resources could only be used by library card carrying NYC residents. There were no accommodations for guests. No, I could not log on to a computer for five minutes to print that single page I desperately needed. Rules are rules, and they are inflexible. Maybe I have a misguided sense of what the mission of our public libraries should be, but I want New Yorkers to know that if they are ever in need of library services in any other state, I am sure that the staff there will bend over backwards to help a stranger or visitor in need. In both the small towns and cities, I have visited, my experience is that library staff see themselves as ambassadors for their community. Welcoming visitors and treating them with kindness. That is, until I came to Bayside :(

Nice library, very clean and well maintained the only thing I don’t like is there’s not being able charge the laptop or other devices I hope there’s more charging outlets like they have in Central location

The library's childrens librarians are supercalifragilisticexpialidocious. Very skilled at dealing with children and extremely entertaining for my children during toddler time. Crafts are fun and unique. Great vibes, so I can't give it anything except for five stars.
