Hunts Point Library | The Bronx, NY

I’m honestly furious after my visit to the Hunts Point Library. The branch manager (the lady with glasses) was unbelievably rude talking down to me like I was bothering her just for asking a simple question. Her attitude was nasty, dismissive, and completely uncalled for. I walked out feeling angry and disrespected. This is supposed to be a community space, not somewhere people get treated like garbage for trying to use library services. It’s beyond disappointing that someone so unkind and unprofessional is running this place. I’ll never come back here, and I really hope the library management does something about this behavior.

I have a pretty good experience every time I go to this library. I only check books in and out but the staff are always nice to me and very efficient. I wish they had more selections of books but I’ve been able to find some good ones with what they have.

Please train that one front desk person who is so unwelcoming to patrons. I am inclined to give this branch a 5 star and yet will hold 4 starts until later. This branch is now clean and there are is a team of helpful librarians assisting, except for one of the old timers in the team who does no even say hello to library users. This person should get a training on how to be at least polite to our neighbors. With the renovation I was hoping this person woukd be sent out as far as possible from our branch to another branch or trained on basic human interactions. She is there on Saturdays, never welcoming anyone but making people feel as intruders in her space. Several months ago I wrote: I am glad to see the rest of the older staff gone and I hope that the remaining old staff learns from the new ones as to how to welcome Bronx neighbors, greet people at our library, and make this (our) place what it is, a safe heaven for so many people in our communities. Prior to the recent renovation, most of the staff was unfriendly, grumpy, and did not make people, at least me, feel that I wanted to visit this branch again after each experience. There was a pre renovation time when those seeking to use the bathroom were asked to show a NYC ID or even a passport. I found this to be unbelievable and yet it did not surprise me that whoever did this, could get away with it in the South Bronx. They would not dare to do this on Manhattan's Upper East Side. May this branch move forward with the times and may the great staff that has recently joined paved the way for how people in our communities should and deserved be treated, with care and dignity. It feels good to start to see this place change and evolved and offer services at the same level as the most branches in other parts of our city.

As a concerned parent, I’m disappointed with my recent visit to the Hunts Point Library. I brought my daughter for what was supposed to be a positive and safe experience, but right at the main entrance—where all children pass through to reach the kids’ section—there were books openly displayed about gay sex and adult themes. I fully understand that we live in a diverse world and respect all people, but I don’t believe explicit content of any kind—regardless of who it represents—should be placed in a space children have to walk through. Kids are growing up way too fast as it is. Libraries should be a place where they can enjoy their innocence, discover books meant for their age group, and feel safe. I’m not asking for censorship, just more thoughtful placement of adult content away from areas meant for children. I hope the library will take feedback like this seriously and reconsider how books are displayed at the entrance, especially when families and young readers are a major part of who visits.

Here's my honest opinion. One I'm glad they're open. The Bronx needs it's resource center to all patrons. Because times have changed I understand the need for security cameras due to circumstances that come out of the blue. Downside security needs improvement stop standing behind patrons it's rude , respect their privacy. Wish they had better seating that's all. This branch has potential for those in need.
