125th Street Library | Manhattan, NY

I attended a free Writers Circle Workshop at the 125th Street Library led by Jessica Hoppe, author of First in the Family. It was a great opportunity to meet new people, exchange ideas, and make potential creative connections. The workshop had a welcoming atmosphere and offered real value for anyone interested in writing, collaboration, and networking. The library itself is newly renovated, clean, and well maintained. I also appreciated the competent security guard presence, which honestly feels necessary given the climate and foot traffic in East Harlem. Staff even escort patrons to the rest rooms, which shows they take safety and order seriously. I would recommend taking the bus there if possible, just to avoid some of the heavy foot traffic and the unpredictable nature of people in the area. Once inside, though, the library feels calm, organized, and cared for. Overall, this branch offers both a safe environment and meaningful community programming. A very positive experience.

As an adult patron, I agree with all the other issues mentioned: Bathroom on the 1st floor doest work, and at times the Area does get crowded but over all it's very clean. As a parent of a teen, I Love that this branch has a Teen Center. It's Spacious and has comfortable seating. Its also on a different floor that the Adult'sand Children's section. The selection of books is great as well as the amount of Activities it organizes for the Kids big and Small.

The teen center feels like another family. Everyone here is always so kind and helpful. The library feels like a safe space and I feel so grateful. The books are all entertaining and so are the programs. Most of all, the staff is so kind and understanding. Shoutout to Andrea and Stephanie, you rock!

This is simply one of the best libraries I've ever been to, which is saying something since I'm a person who loves books and loves reading, and so to me libraries are essentially sacred temples. Being a new resident of New York City, I never visited this branch before the renovation but the space in its current incarnation is bright and inviting. The staff, at least the ones I've encountered, is uniformly excellent and helpful, not just with books but even the necessities of life, such as teaching one about computers or helping one find a job. Some, such as Clara and Matt, are friendlier than others, will even smile and greet upon seeing you, while others won't even bother to acknowledge your existence, but all I've dealt with knew their jobs and were always ready to help (even when they seemed sullen and wore sour faces). (I admit I don't know all the librarians there, sometimes seeing new faces - well, at least new to me - of people I presume work on other floors or in back offices.) The two library pages, Anthony and Chris, are also very kind and solicitous. Some of the patrons sometimes get a little unruly but that's okay. A library is meant to serve all in a community, and, in that regard, there are all sorts of entertaining and informative and edifying events held at the branch. If I have one quibble, it's that it has taken forever to see to repairs to the restrooms, which sometimes makes for a long line of people waiting to be escorted to the facilities.

I had a wonderful time at the library — it was exactly the calm and focused environment I needed. The atmosphere was quiet but welcoming, and the staff were friendly and respectful of everyone’s space. The seating was comfortable, the lighting was soft, and it was easy to get lost in reading or work without distraction. What I appreciated most was how peaceful everything felt — a rare sense of calm that makes it easy to think, write, or simply enjoy the moment. If you’re looking for a quiet place to reflect, study, or recharge, this library is truly a hidden gem.
